While many of us have love on the brain this month (however you may feel about Valentine’s day) it’s worth taking a closer look at aspects of love that go beyond romance.
Join us in February to discuss ‘All About Love: New Visions’ by the legendary author, educator, and activist bell hooks. We’re diving back to the turn of the century with this modern classic! We lost this wonderful human in 2021, and her legacy is sure to live on for generations to come.
[Note: Message me to attend in person, as space is limited! Otherwise, join us on Zoom 🙂.]
This meeting will be facilitated by a full-time Life Coach (yours truly) and former university educator with over a decade of international experience in facilitating discussions across groups from various cultural backgrounds and beliefs. We value inclusivity 🏳️⚧️🏳️🌈🖤💛❤️✊🏽 and insist on respectful discussion. We are not a ‘positive vibes only’ crew. We invite you to bring your WHOLE self to the discussion! Wanna suss me out ahead of time to see if we’ll ‘gel’? Then feel free to have a snoop here ☺:
From the book jacket:
The word ‘love’ is most often defined as a noun, yet…we would all love better if we used it as a verb,” writes bell hooks as she comes out fighting and on fire in All About Love. Here, at her most provocative and intensely personal, the renowned scholar, cultural critic, and feminist skewers our view of love as romance. In its place she offers a proactive new ethic for a people and a society bereft with lovelessness.
As bell hooks uses her incisive mind and razor-sharp pen to explore the question “What is love?” her answers strike at both the mind and heart. In thirteen concise chapters, hooks examines her own search for emotional connection and society’s failure to provide a model for learning to love. Razing the cultural paradigm that the ideal love is infused with sex and desire, she provides a new path to love that is sacred, redemptive, and healing for individuals and for a nation. The Utne Reader declared bell hooks one of the “100 Visionaries Who Can Change Your Life.” All About Love is a powerful affirmation of just how profoundly she can.
“Each offering from bell hooks is a major event, as she has so much to give us.” – Maya Angelou
“A brave, intelligent, vulnerable look at the most sought-after and least examined emotion. By being honest about the barriers to love, bell hooks makes it more possible.” – Gloria Steinem
“She provides a refreshing spiritual treatise that steps outside the confines of the intellect and into the wilds of the heart.” – Seattle Weekly
“Like love, this book is worth the commitment.” – Toronto Sun
At this meetup, we will discuss hooks’ insights on love and how they may relate to our own lives. Love the book? Hate the book? No time to read the book? You’re all welcome! Message me if you’d like to attend in person, as space is limited. But remember, you can always join us on Zoom as well 😊
